These collections will always have a special place in my heart. It's kinda less of a story and more of an observation about his process, but it's fascinating nonetheless. Obviously some of the stories were added in for fun, but Alvin was a dedicated man. The sound of the wrong word would ruin the flow of the story for him. He wanted to make sure the message was clear to children in every word. He would lock himself away and stay up late hours and read and re-read with the addition of every word. So Alvin's son was talking about how his dad had a really dedicated process in writing these stories. My favorite story about Alvin was one I heard in my first search when writing this paper. My thesis was like 16 pages and really goes into detail, but my favorite line will always be my closer: "Folklore belongs in the hearts and minds of children for no one else would be able to keep it quite as alive". I really love how he unabashedly wrote about really gritty and gory things in ways children could understand and relate to. The full title of it was "Fear, Reading, and Morality: What Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Series Teaches Children". My senior thesis was about these spooky folktales that Alvin so lovingly collected and re-wrote. It's all so great, and if you're aware these books mix comedy with horror, and are okay with some stories ending with a joke, find these books ASAP. Some are popular like the sewer rat being brought home as a pet from Mexico, and others are much more obscure like "Harold". Lots of interesting history on the backgrounds of these legends. I used to love reading the sources in the back of the book. Some of the more creepy ones I remember were "Room for One More", I think the other was called "Like Cats Eyes" or something, where a hearse waits outside a dying man's building, and quite a few more. Some were definitely more comedic, but some were actually really creepy, and going back to them as an adult, I feel there is some depth to some of the stories, with the cheesy and funny ones thrown in there for good measure, which, with that mindset, does great at mixing up the stories. Yeah there were a lot of odd stories like the big toe, the viper, etc. Got a suggestion for a new flair? Send us a modmail!
